Bankgirot publishes payment statistics monthly for the Swedish retail payment system/retail funds transfer system market. The statistics cover payments within the Bankgiro system. Below is a summary of developments during the past month. Real-time payments were processed by Bankgirot in the Real-Time Payments system, BiR, until February 2024. At that point, real-time payments were transitioned to Sweden’s central bank, The Riksbank, and their new RIX-INST system. This was a part of the transformation of Sweden's payment infrastructure that has been ongoing for several years. Consequently, statistics for BiR end after February 2024.

Payments in the Real time payment system
The volume trend in real time payments in the Bankgirot Real Time payment system BiR was strong between 2012 and 2024, during the system's operational period.
In February 2024, BiR was closed down as real time payments are now handled by The Riksbank, Sweden’s central bank. This as a part of the transformation of the payment market in Sweden, which has been going on for several years. No payments was therefore made in BiR during December.
